Divya Gurnay, conquered Rudugaira peak ( 19091 feet) in the region of Gangotri glacier on 17th june 2010. She accomplished this feat as a part of a 19 member all girls team from different corners of India. The team included Maj. Geetanjali from Indian Army, Divya Gurnay, Sonali Bhatia, Archana Thakur, Neetu Tanwar, Kritika Bhardwaj, twins Nungshi and Tashi Malik, Pinki Bhaskandi, Guneet Puri, Vallari Pathak, Indira Kadambi, Anusha Subramanium, Aparna Akhani, Mamta Rawat, Ambika Rana, Rashi Rawat, Sukanaya Aidey, and Ms Banarsi.
It is worth mentioning here that conquering Rudugaira peak standing tall at 19091 feet was not a routine climb. This peak is higher than Mt. Elbrus which is the highest peak in Europe and is higher than Vinson Massif, the highest peak in Antarctica. RuduGaira peak is one of the prestigious peaks of Gangotri region and on the wanted list of many experienced climbers. It has been scaled by extreme sport ladies like Padmashree Bachendri Pal and Padmashree Chandraprabha Aitwal to name the famous few of the league. It was for the first time that Nehru Institute of Mountaineering made its all women team achieve this task and create a record in mountaineering.
The minimum requirement to attempt conquering any such challenging height is to have learnt advanced skills in mountaineering. For learning these skills the best way is to first qualify the basic mountaineering course from NIM Uttarkashi, HMI Darjeeling or DMAS Manali with an ‘Alpha’ grade so as to be recommended for the advance training. Second step is to successfully finish the advance training in mountaineering focused on high altitude and extreme conditions.
NIM is a blue blooded institute of mountaineering, famous all over the world for training some of the best mountaineers from all across the globe. As per Divya, NIM was a great learning experience. It is at NIM that mountaineers learn that extreme sports like mountaineering are not just about learning sports techniques but developing many other skills like first aid in extreme conditions, cooking in high altitude, teamwork and team spirit, weather forecasting and many other extreme survival techniques, that come in handy in making vital decisions and save life and limb in extreme conditions.
Divya Gurunay is a single girl child of her parents and has many firsts to her name. Having won more than 24 medals in various athletic events, this alumnus of Yadavindra Public School was the winner of best all rounder of YPS in year 2008 and remained the school captain of this prestigious school. Other than being the cricket blue of YPS she is an ace horse rider and a hard core adventurer. She is also the winner of more than 30 national inter-school, inter-college and university level debates and declamations. Just to name a few of her recent wins she won the first prize in the Punjab University zonal debate, 1st and 2nd prize consequently for two years in Vishnu Gupta memorial debate organized by rotary club Chandigarh, First prize in 'Soch' media debate organized by Department of Mass communication Punjab University.
An active social worker who remained the secretary of her Rotaract club under rotary district 3080, she is especially thankful to her school, Yadavindra Public School for initiating her and other students of YPS into allround activities like social work, trekking and mountaineering at a very young age. It was in her school days that she vanquished all fear of height and fatigue via regular camps in the himalayas.
She joined MCM DAV College from where she went to do a basic course in mountaineering form Nehru Institute of Mountaineering UttarKashi, in the year 2009. She came out with flying colors, got an 'A' Grade and went further to do advance course in mountaineering which she again qualified with an 'A' grade. Later Divya successfully completed her 'Method of Instruction Course' with an 'Alpha' Grade from NIM to join an elite group of very few qualified women mountaineering instructors in the country.
Divya was was awarded 'The Duke of Edinburgh Award' for youth. She graduated with honours in psychology from regions elite girls college, the MCM DAV College Chandigarh. She was the President of student union and student's council of MCM DAV College Chandigarh. After having finished her 'Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication' from Punjab University, Chandigarh, She is presently pursuing L.L.B at Punjab university.
When asked as to what ahead, Divya calmly observers, “There is no end to the challenges that life offers but if you have the courage and passion, all peaks are climbable and all goals are achievable. I have my studies to focus on for the time being. My mom's love and my dad's motivation push me ahead in life as they have taught me never to piggy ride someone like a tick on a dog but be an achiever in my own right. I am doing fine and will do better in future." When asked to remember one most unforgettable moment during her expedition, Divya said, "It was when we held the tricolour on Rudugaira peak."
