1.  What is SPG or NSG, or who is in their control, army or cops, MOD or MOH, a student wanted to know ⁉

2.  Although details are available on WWW, but to clear the air in a quick short reading, here is the crux of it all.

*SPG*
i.  SPG,  or 'Special Protection Group', is a special commando  force  constituted, equipped  and trained specially  to provide protection to the honourable office and person of Prime Minister of India.

ii.   After the assassination of Shri Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991, the  SPG Act was amended to  provide security,  to former Prime Ministers and their immediate families , for 10 years, after them having left  the office .

iii.  The director of the SPG since its inception has always been an IPS officer .

iv.   Personnel of the SPG are drawn from 'Central Armed Police Forces'  and 'Railway Protection Force', but the officers are always from the IPS or RPF.

*NSG.*
i. Note that  NSG, or 'National Security Guards' do not report to army, but to Home ministry.

ii.  NSG was raised in 1984, as a force puerly for combating terrorism.

iii.  NSG is a force devouted to anti terror operations, Bomb disposal and anti hijacking and some other V.V. special Ops. Significant operations attributed to NSG are Black Thunder, Ashwamedh, Many Combat missions in Jammu and Kashmir, Op. Vajra Shakti, Op.Black Tornado and more.

iv.  Personnel,  in NSG are always  volunteers on deputation from 'Central Armed Police Forces' and 'Indian Army' .  Men and mid level personnel are from CPOs and  Army,  where as Senior leadership is  always chosen at the discretion of Ministry of Home.

v.   Both these forces are special commando forces with very special tasks and training, extremly high tech weapons and equipment,  and some over-riding previleges.
