🚩Lal Chaunk Flag hoisting ceremony, as held on 26 January 1992.🚩 @ 📚GBG⚔

1.  In 1992, as a result of holding out too long an olive branch to militants,  and resulting from a policy of  appeasement,  armed militants ruled the streets of Srinagar city and dominated rural Kashmir.

2.   Indian Army, was  then tasked, along with BSF,  already engaged in task, to restore order. Such were the circumstances then, that militant morale was very high, they were heavily armed,  and the armed forces had  perforce to be extremly strict. As a result, the area became a red hot battle zone.

3. Admist this chaos,  terrorists and sepratists, as a show of their dominance and control,  announced that if anyone comes to Lal Chaunk, (Red Square)  Srinagar,  to hoist the national flag, he or she  won't return back alive.

4.  It was then, that Mr. Murli Manohar Joshi, the then president of BJP,  announced that he will  hoist the flag in Lal Chaunk on 26 January 1992. Veterans like former PM, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and  Veteran leader LK Advani, and then a young hawk, Namo were reportedly present in that rally.

5.  Murli  Manohar Joshi ji, announced that he would reach J&K with 10,000 supporters to hoist the national flag. Joshi ji, and other veteran leaders  including Lal Krishan Advani ji,   and late  Vajpayee ji,  then organised an  “Ekta Yatra” from 'Kanyakumari to Kashmir', in which Namo Ji, Late Pramod Mahajan ji and some other top leaders of today, were front runners. Many other Bhajpayees and people from across party lines  participated in the Ekta Yatra.

6.  Militants were furious over the announcement of Mr. Joshi.  Sepratists decided to intensity their operations to intimidate and stop anyone from participating in such a flag hoisting event.

7.   As a result they orchestrated an attack on DGP of Kashmir, by detonating a bomb in DGP's table  drawer, critically injuring the the police chief along with his assisting staff.  Mr. Omar Abdullah, was the CM those days.

8.  Mr. Joshi decided to go on with the flag hoisting plan. Media was playing up its drums as usual.   It was a double bull challange in those testing times, for the forces on ground to ensure the safety of  BJP leaders along with their supporters, who had announced  to come on their vehicles to Srinagar.

9.  Letting folks drive almost 250 kilometers from Jammu to Srinagar, via a highway infested with militants, was a sure recipe for disaster, but allowing, not letting the national flag to be hosted, would also have been a strategic defeat for the nation.

10.  Thus things progressed as follows. An indefinite curfew was imposed,   with shoot at sight orders in Srinagar area. To completely  insulate a highway, as long as Jammu-Srinagar highway of terrorist infestation,  was impossible.

11.  Thus the government decided to airlift the BJP president  to Srinagar from Jammu. The BJP president Mr Joshi was airlifted to Srinagar via an army helicopter,  and driven to Lal Chaunk under extreme security cover.

12.  Lets look at what was the scenario in Srinagar that day.  A radio  announcement had been made that  Lal Chaunk has been handed over to army. Army and BSF turned the area in to a fortress by putting up scores of sandbag walls and  check-posts, fortressing it completely.

13.  Curfew was strictly enforced  by faujis armed to teeth. Almost every door, every window, every roof had men in uniform dominating the complete area. There was no place in the sanitized area, that could be breached and used by militants.  Panicked residents, who lived around Lal Chowk had all simply disappeard, as if in to oblivion.

14.   In the afternoon, Mr Joshi surrounded by Army and BSF personnel appeared in Lal Chaunk. Four to  five rockets were fired towards the flag hoisting venue by the militants, although  none of them reached the intended target. As Joshi ji  raised the flag on the pedestal of clock tower, in the ensuing chaos the flag rod broke down and fell on his forehead, injuring him.

15.  If Namo Sahib,  accompanied  Murli Joshi ji that day, till Jammu or  till Clock Tower at Lal Chaunk Srinagar, is a subject of research,  but the flag hoisting was done  by Shri M.M Joshi, under  circumstances, already explained.
