1. Bogibeel bridge is a double decked bridge in Assam, connecting its Dhemaji and Dibrugarh districts across Brahmaputra river.
2. The project is almost 21 years old, but the actual work on the project began in 2011, during UPA-2.
3. Historically, Bogibeel bridge can said to be the child of '1985 Assam Accord', being one of the major infrastructural projects planned as per the pact, aimed at integrating north east with main stream India via better transport and communication channels.
4. Project was sanctioned by Government of India in 1997. Foundation stone of this bridge was laid by then Prime Minister, H.D.Deva Gowda in january 1997. After all the basic construction facilities were established, construction work of the bridge started in 2002, inaugurated by then Prime minister Shri A. B. Vajpayee, however due to lack of funds and attention the work proper did not begin until 2007.
5. In 2007, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, granted a 'National Project Status', to Bogibeel bridge. As a result, the Government of India, ministry of finance started funding 75% of it's costs while 25% was to be financed by Railway ministry. As a result the project got completed in 2018 and was opened to traffic by Prime minister Shri Narendra Modi. This is the short and long of 'BB' bridge.
6. Measuring 4.96 kilometres, this bridge is, the first fully welded steel-concrete bridge in India, capable of withstanding earthquakes upto Richter Scale 7. The second longest Rail and Road bridge in Asia, is expected to have a 120 years of serviceable life.
7. BB bridge is designed to bear the weight of battle tank loaded trains. It is strong enough to allow Indian air force warplanes, including the Russian-made heavyweights, the Sukhoi Fighters, to take off from it and land on it, if need be. The bridge is of strategic importance as it speeds up the movement of Indian Army to Arunachal Pradesh, if such deployment becomes necessary.
8. Incidentally, the question is bound to arise in any inquisitive mind, that, if this mega bridge took 21 years to build, than which is the llongest bridge in the world, and how much time it took to build it ❓❓❓❓
9. The llongest bridge in world and Asia is the Danyang Kunshan bridge in China, having a length of164.8 kilometres/ 102.4 miles. The bridge is located in Yangtze River Delta, saturated with lowland rice fields, canals, rivers, and lakes. The bridge runs 8 to 80 km south of the river Yangtze, almost parallel with the rivers alignment. When we compare, commitment and dedication of the Asian dragon with asian tiger, we will have to keep in mind that this 165 kilometers long rail bridge, was completed by Chinese in just 4 years, whereas we Indians took 21 years to complete a 4km 960m bridge.
10. It is worth mentioning once again, that the BogiBeel bridge project, was actually inaugurated in January 1997, but the work could not progress the way it should have for years together due to lack of funds. The bridge was given a 'National Project', status by Dr. Manmohan Singh, our past P.M., in the year 2007, thereby removing all financial obstacles in the path of it's completion.
11. BogiBeel bridge is a monument of pride, and thus is most certainly one of the modern pilgrimages of India. I rate it above any Sirdar Patel, Gandhi, or Deen Dayal Statue.
